Starting in January 2018, Mercedes-Benz Vans will begin a mass hiring initiative for manufacturing positions at its North Charleston plant, the company announced Wednesday. By 2020, company officials say Mercedes expects to have added more than 1,000 new jobs in the Lowcountry.

Mark Allen, Head of Body and Paint for the plaint, says the company is looking to fill 1,300 jobs over the next two years as part of an expansion.

“People can go through and apply for jobs there," Allen said Wednesday. "They can go through their assessment there, and we also do our interviewing there.”

Mercedes has partnered with Charleston County to fill the open positions.

This expansion will include two new buildings, a body shop measuring in at more than a half a million square feet, and a paint shop that will be only slightly smaller at more than 450,000 square feet.

A 1.2-mile conveyor will be constructed to connect the two facilities, officials say.

“The vehicle that is started Monday morning in the body shop will leave the facility before the end of the week as a complete product,” CEO Michael Balke said of the Mercedes Sprinter and Metris vans built in the North Charleston plant.
